BlackStar Film Festival 2015
A few short weeks ago, I had the unforgettable experience of working at the BlackStar Film Festival:
A celebration of cinema focused on work by and about people of African descent in a global context. BlackStar highlights films that are often overlooked from emerging, established, and mid-career directors, writers and producers working in narrative, documentary, experimental and music video filmmaking.
Through my role, I wrote the festival newsletters, specifically creating daily highlights for the festival, in collaboration with the Director. Once the festival started, I assisted with guest services for the first few days, and continued with my newsletter role throughout the weekend.
It was so much fun getting to know the team, as well as filmmakers and festival audience members. The vibe of the entire weekend was just so inspiring.
On Day 1, one of the highlights included a panel on Black Women & Indie Film, as well as the opening night reception.
Day 2 included great features such as Le Belle Vie: The Good Life, about a Haitan American filmmaker’s journey to discover her roots.
Day 3 highlights included a panel on Media and Social Justice, as well as the premiere of the documentary BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez.
Lastly, on Day 4 the festival wrapped up with an amazing Master Class with Sam Pollard, as well as the highly anticipated Closing Awards Ceremony.
I look forward to next year’s festival! For more information on BlackStar, visit http://blackstarfest.org/
